Elizabeth Shanahan to exhibit her origianl paintings in The Apple Gallery

Aug 1 - Sep 15

The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of our upcoming exhibit of original paintings by Elizabeth Shanahan in the Apple Gallery from August 1-September 15. An in-person opening will be held on Friday, August 13, 2021, from 5:30p.m.-7:00p.m. in the Apple Gallery of the Stokes County Arts Council 500 Main Street Danbury, NC. The opening will also include a film screening of “Nella Luce,” a dance film featuring painted bodies, in collaboration with Joy Shanahan. Elizabeth is a professional artist living in Lewisville, NC with her husband, their four-year-old daughter, two rescue dogs and cat. Elizabeth’s work can be viewed on her website, elizabethshanahan.com and her Instagram, @elizabeth.shanahan. Joy is a student at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, where she enjoys hiking with her dog. She has created two dance films. Her first, “In the Thick of It,” can be viewed on her Instagram @shanahanmoves. Elizabeth works in two-dimensional, mixed media painting. She experiments with different methods of gold leaf, stitching, and mixing painting and drawing techniques. Joy is a dancer and choreographer. Joy and Elizabeth collaborated on the dance film featuring painted bodies. Elizabeth explained: “It was a challenge on both sides, learning to work within the parameters of each other’s media to create one piece of art, but the result was one of the most rewarding projects either of us have ever worked on.” “Nella Luce” is Italian for Into the Light, and the film project was conceived in the depths of the pandemic. The artists wanted to demonstrate that even when times are at their darkest, we have the ability to choose joy each day. “The light is there to find.” Throughout her career, Elizabeth has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work including a residency at Camac Centre d’Art, Marnay-sur-Seine, France in 2015. Her work was shown from Florida to New York and as far west as Arizona and at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Her other exhibits have included Spaces Between, a solo exhibition at Blowing Rock Art and History Museum, Blowing Rock, NC in 2016, Descant, a solo exhibition at Looking Glass Gallery, Boone, NC in 2015, and Water, Sky, and the Divide, a two-person exhibition with Rebecca Bremer at Nth Degree Gallery, Boone, NC in 2016. Joy has also received such recognitions for her work as the Dance Rising Junior Award, Dance Masters of Southern Council Jazz Scholarship, Top Ten Miss Dance, and Star Talent Nationals. Elizabeth completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with honors, concentrating in painting and drawing from Appalachian State University and graduated summa cum laude. Joy is a Senior dance major, finishing a Bachelor of Arts at Appalachian State University as well as seven years dance training at Dance Dynamics Studio with Missy Fincher and Ronnie Zinc. This exhibit will be on display August 1-September 15, 2021 in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes County Arts Council is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm, Saturday, 10:00a.m.-6:00p.m. and Sunday 1:00pm-6:00pm. TeeTotalers & Moonshiners - Prohibition in Virginia, Distilled

Aug 1-28

Virginians imbibed their last legal drink on Halloween night in 1916 - more than three years before national prohibition was enacted. For the next 18 years the state became a laboratory for a grand social experiment that ultimately left many Virginians with a serious hangover - and eventually led to repeal. This exhibit from the Library of Virginia addresses the important and long-lasting effects of Prohibition on Virginia and America. The Blue Ridge Institute and Museum's exhibition "Moonshine in the Blue Ridge" is also on display as well. Learn more about how moonshine contributed to the economy of this area and how Prohibition forced many legal distilleries to turn to illegal measurers. Exhibition is open Sundays 1-4 and Tuesdays-Fridays 9-3. FREE. On view through August 28th.

Mayberry 4 Paws Golf Tournament

Sep 23

Mayberry 4 Paws Golf Tournament, Pilot Knob Park Country Club, September 23, 2021, 8:30 AM Check in, 9:30 AM Tee Off. Mayberry 4 Paws Rescue (a 501 c 3 non-profit organization) started in 2008 with funds from a yard sale. The original goal was to help increase affordable spay and neuter in our county, as a means to reduce the number of dogs euthanized at our local shelter. Through years of hard work and many volunteers, we have increased our efforts. We promote change to county ordinances to offer more protection for animals. In addition to that, we work tirelessly to continue to offer low cost spay and neuter services as well as helping to place more than 800 dogs, annually, with our rescue partners and into perfect homes. The funds from this tournament will help us continue with our efforts.

Museum on Main Street Tour 2021-2022: Crossroads: Change in Rural America

Dec 4 - Jan 9

Save the Date: December 4, 2021 to January 9, 2022 - VT/Reynolds Homestead to host "Museum on Main" --Introduction/Welcome to Crossroads: Change in Rural America. Hosted at the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce/Creative Arts Center, 334 Patrick Avenue, Stuart, VA. ? Sliding or flip-up panels explore different aspects of rural ife that experienced great change over the past century. Welcome to rural America, a crossroads of change in a vast land. American Indians who were already here, those who came in search of a better life, and people who were forced to move all contributed to the development of rural America. Throughout the 19th century, the majority of Americans lived in rural areas. They built their lives around the work of harvesting what the land could produce—the food, fuel, fiber, ores, and minerals crucial to a growing nation. They built communities at rural crossroads—small towns that became centers of commerce, politics, and culture. But conditions favorable to robust rural communities changed. Early in the 20th century, growing urban populations shifted economic investment and political influence from the counties to the cities. Since then, the pace of rural change has accelerated. Today, rural communities are at a new crossroads—a meeting point of ideas where they can chart their own future. With their innovations and creative spirit, rural Americans are helping to define and shape the future of the country. Subtitle: Where people meet, ideas interest, and change is constant. ---Credits: Crossroads: Change in Rural America is a Museum on Main Street exhibition developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. Brought to you by the [state humanities council]. Funded by the U.S. Congress. [State] programming is supported by [state partners].
